Missions and Activities

Mission & Activities

This department opened in 1963, and initially made targets for experiments at local accelerators. Over the years it evolved to eventually make contributions at a national and international level. It also has a sideline in metal plating, particularly in the manufacturing of plated electrodes for gaseous detectors used in nuclear and particle physics experiments.

The department gained reknown through its expertise in the manufacturing of self-supporting thin layer targets. Today, it is one of the few laboratories able to master this technique and be competitive at an international level.

Three types of film thin layers are manufactured :

  •  Surface deposits
  •  Self-supporting layers
  •  Polymers

There are several applications, two common used are :

  •  filters for high power laser applications T
  •  Targets for atomic and nuclear experiments at particle accelerators.
