Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN), Italy

Website: http://www.infn.it

The Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN) is one of the most important research institutes in Italy. It was founded in 1951 and is responsible for coordinating and financing subnuclear and nuclear research.

As part of its activities INFN has always been closely involved with the design and building of particle accelerators and detectors both for its National Laboratories and as partners in international collaborations hosted in the major accelerator-based laboratories worldwide (CERN, DESY, FNAL, SNS, CEBAF and many other). INFN personnel has contributed to the machine layout of several accelerator facilities, and designed and built subsystems for a variety of particle accelerators and their detector systems. A particular area of expertise strongly connected to the MAX project concerns the development of superconducting cavities and the design and realization
of all the auxiliary components that are needed to allow its operation and control its performances – e.g. tuning systems and cryomodules. INFN has a long history of collaboration with international research institutions.

INFN key person involved in the MAX project:

Paolo Pierini works in the field of superconducting radiofrequency accelerators. He has been involved in the study of the accelerator systems for the Nuclear Waste Transmutation concept since the late 90s with the TRASCO Program in Italy, and has actively participated to both the EURATOM activities on transmutation in the FP5 (PDS-XADS) and FP6 (EUROTRANS).
