The Catholic University of Portugal – Faculty of Engineering is an autonomous institution of public utility with high standard of academic and research activity assessed and recognized publicly. Established in 2000 FE-UCP is a new Faculty aimed at promoting excellence in higher education, R&D focusing on innovative areas including Electrical/Mechanical/Biomedical/Civil Engineering (amongst others). FE-UCP has a multidisciplinary staff including resident faculty (PhD) and invited experts with strategic views on practical needs of the labor market. FE-UCP has close cooperation with industry, universities/research institutes, regulators/authorities and scientific bodies. Areas of interest and active research include accelerator physics, nonlinear dynamics, medical technologies, cancer research, simulation, modelling and control of complex systems. FE-UCP has successfully participated in several national and international research projects and received funding from several institutions (AdI-Prime, Gulbenkian Foundation, FCT, European FP).

FE-UCP key person involved in the MAX project:

Rui PIRES – Associate Professor at the Portuguese Catholic University (UCP) since 2007. Received his BSc in Technological Physics Engineering from IST (Portugal, 1987) and his Phd in Physics (Nonlinear Beam Dynamics in Particle Accelerators) from IST (Portugal, 1992). Was a Technical Student (1986-1987) and a Doctoral Student (1988-1991) at the Antiproton Accumulator of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN, Geneva) and a Research Associate at pbar Source of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab, 1992-1995). Worked as Assistant Professor at the Independent University (Lisbon, 1995-2000), Lisbon Technical University (IST, 1997-2000) and UCP (2000-2007). P7: IAP (Institute für Angewandte Physik, Germany).
