IGLEX

The creation of a multidisciplinary center of technology and applied sciences has been proposed, named IGLEX, around the two Equipex projects, Andromeda (IPNO) and ThomX (LAL). This operation consists in installing in the building 209c (called Igloo), the nanoparticle accelerator Andromeda, the intense X-ray source ThomX, the associated control rooms, experimental lab, laser cabin, and assembly and sample preparation rooms. The building is ideally adapted to accommodate these projects and will allow future extensions. Figure 1 shows a sketch of this platform.

To ensure a level of radiation in the Igloo compatible with the use of Andromeda and ThomX, the two accelerators are placed each in a concrete bunker to minimize radiation. The radioprotection groups of each laboratory (S. Wurth IPNO, JM. Horodinsky UDIL) simulated the radiations for each accelerator and calculated the dimensions of each bunker. The surface of the Igloo is 1059 m², the accelerator Andromeda spans 250 m² and the X-ray source ThomX about 270 m². The halls called D1 (about 425 m²) and D2 (225 m²) will receive laboratories and ancillary and control rooms.

The IGLEX multidisciplinary platform focuses, through a concerted effort on fundamentals and accelerator research, on the updating of techniques to increase the domain of applications (innovative instruments and methods for the generation of high resolution molecular images and wide high resolution tomography) and their impact. These groups will fully exploit the complementary information provided by using photons, electrons and ion beams. The applications of these facilities will cover a large field of research : biochemistry, astrophysics, material science, environment and cultural heritage. Several laboratories, in and out (Institut Pasteur) of the IDEX Campus Paris-Saclay have expressed great interest in the project and will become users of these facilities.
