Missions AND ActivitIEs

The main tasks of the mechanical engineering department is the study, design and implementation of components for accelerators and beam lines. The group has extensive experience and a proven expertise through the collaboration CERN - CEA - CNRS established for the LHC project.Acknowledged for his expertise, he has become a major actor on many projects in the framework of cooperations on different levels : European (ESS , SPL, MAX MYRRHA), national (ESS , SPL, MAX MYRRHA), national (Equipex : ANDROMEDA, DESIR and S3) and local (ECOMI, SUPRATECH and ALTO facilities) .

Composed of a dozen people, the team provides mechanical studies in a project management approach, using a set of tools for data management and quality assurance procedures . The services range from design, calculations and simulations, writing up technical specifications, drawing files, tenders, following manufacturing on site.

Skills and Equipment

The expertise of its members covers a wide range of knowledge. It allows the group to carry out the studies with efficiency and reactivity.

MECHANICAL DESIGN WITH INTEGRATION OF VACUUM TECHNOLOGY AND CRYOGENY

  • Cryomodules and associated tools,
  • Radio-Frequency superconducting cavities,
  • Beam transport lines,
  • Focusing and deflecting elements (electrostatic, magnetic)
    CAD software used : Catia V5, Autocad

FINITE ELEMENT SIMULATIONS

INSTALLATION AND MONITORING OF PROJECTS

  • Coordination of projects or work packages for transport line elements : study, or construction, and facilities,
  • Industrialization and follow up of the production of components.
    Data management software EDMS for general information and Smarteam for technical data 
    Assembly workshop in the laboratory.

  • Design and production follow-up of the cryostats (136 variants) and of the assembly tools for the short straight sections of the LHC
  • Design of cryostats for quadrupoles with their assembly tools for the S-LHC project

Mechanical design of elements of the accelerator and experimental halls :

  • LINAC :
    •  SC quarter wave cavity , cryomodule B and assembly and test tools
    • Cryogenic distribution lines
  • NFS Magnetic Dipole to deflect protons
  • S3 :
    • Electrostatic dipole
    •  Cryogenic distribution lines
    • Resonant ionization laser ion source
  • DESIR : Electrostatic beam transport lines to the DESIR hall

RECENT PROJECTS FOR HIGH INTENSITY supraconducting LINAC

  • SPL : Design of a cryomodule to test elliptical cavities
  • MAX : Mechanical design of the Spoke type SC cavity and of the cryomodule
  • ESS WP4 (for the average energy section of the superconducting linac ) :
    •  Coordination of all the mechanical studies
    •  Mechanical design of the Spoke type SC cavity, the power coupler, the cryomodule and the tools
    •  Follow-up of the manufacturing of the prototypes
  • ESS WP5 (for the high energy section of the linac) :
    • Design of the cryomodules for elliptical cavities in collaboration with CEA
    •  Follow-up of the manufacturing of a demonstrator
