Ab initio predictions for polarized deuterium-tritium thermonuclear fusion

In an ab initio study based on the fundamental interaction between neutrons and protons, a team involving IPNO was able to test the validity of a 50-year-old working hypothesis that opens the way to enhanced yield for thermonuclear reactors of the future. At the ITER facility in France, a consortium of nations is trying to generate energy from the fusion of deuterium (D) and tritium (T). It turns out that fundamental properties of quantum mechanics may be exploited to boost the yield of the (...)

A record production of ultra-pure radioactive beams by laser ion source is obtained at ALTO

To push the studies of the structure of exotic nuclei further and further from stability, it is necessary to have recourse to more and more elaborate purification techniques. For these studies, the very short-lived nuclei are actually produced from very minority channel reactions. It is necessary to isolate them from the other produced nuclei in order to reach a S/N ratio allowing to identify them unambiguously and to obtain data of quality. To produce exotic nuclei with the ISOL method at (...)

New methods to identify low energy 3He with Silicon-based detectors

The identification of low energy mass-3 nuclei is crucial for the study of nuclear structure via transfer reactions. For example, one nucleon transfer like (d,3He) and (d,t) give detailed information on the proton and neutron orbitals respectively. The paper gives a review of the present methods used to detect and identify mass-3 particles. Time of flight is often used but does not allow to disentangle between 3He and tritons. The addition of thin Silicon detectors (20 um) gives the (...)

IPNO at RADECS2018 conference: a way of promoting ALTO facility

In order to open the ALTO platform to external services, our laboratory participated in the most important conference on RADiation Effects on Components and Systems (RADECS). The conference was held from 16 to 21 September in Gothenburg, where more than 500 participants, including major players in aeronautics and space, were gathered. Our ALTO colleagues held an exhibition booth to present service offerings (radiation tests, advices and training) to industry and research organizations. (...)
